Natalya SuperNova and the Art of Self Portraiture

Natalya Nova has been an artist that is the definition of creativity. She has a niche that sets her from everyone else by using her subconscious to create her one of a kind pieces of work. I got the privilege to interview Natalya and talk her about what keeps her influences in life and how she stays positive.

  • You are a one of a kind artist, how did you find your niche in such a creative field?

My niche is my dreamscape. It is derived from multicultural allegories, mythologies and symbols. My work refers to my subconscious mind and in this way melds with the collective unconscious that resonates with people. I want them to see and feel the familiar.

  • Describe your style in three words?

Freely Flowing and Perversity.

  • What influences your work?

I am influenced by an array of things. From Japanese literature to films, Federico Fellini to comic books and also 3D Pop Up books and Pop Culture.

  • Is there anyone you look up to or that inspires you?

My dear late friend inspired me. He was the one who persuaded me to pick up a professional camera. My teacher at ICP taught me to understand my voice. I picked up my love of fine art through my teacher which helped with who I look up to today. My love partner, who rescued me from self destruction, provided support and guidance, showed me my colourful self and breathed everything he knew into my consciousness.

  • How do you stay positive within your work?

I believe that things always work out for the best. I believe that I am very lucky.

  • Have you had any struggles within your work or struggles with becoming the artist you are today?

Life of an artist is full of struggles and hair pulling experiences.  When I feel like I can’t handle the pressure anymore I usually take a long nap.

  • You give off such a vibe that your followers and audience look up to, how do you convert your energy into your art?

Everything starts with an idea. Like a puzzle it comes together. My most important job is to bring it to the final “execution” point. The best ideas are the ones you actually do.

  • What got you into art? Were you influenced by something or was it a natural gift of yours?

In Russia, where I grew up in the 90’s, any technology generated excitement. I was 12 years old when I held my first camera. It was a little Sony and it was pure magic. From that moment I wanted to document everything.

When I moved to New York being an artist was inevitable.

  • What is the number one thing you live by on a day to day basis?

“Internal combustion and wind in the face” - The Gumball Rally

  • Favourite artist/’s at the moment?

Forever favorites are Pierre Molinier, Tamara de Lempicka, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Man Ray, Andre Kertesz and Salvador Dalí.

From the ones that are alive today - Damien Hirst, JR, Edoardo Tresoldi, Yayoi Kusama.
