A New Perspective on Elegance

Elegance is both a mindset and a way of carrying oneself. For Fall-Winter 2025, Wooyoungmi celebrates this concept as a guiding principle for rethinking how we present ourselves. In Korean, “Ch’ŏrhak” means philosophy, and its definition “how to become wiser” inspires a focus on self-improvement. Through this lens, Wooyoungmi envisions dressing as a thoughtful act of courtesy that reflects respect, empathy, and calmness.

Classical Foundations and Contemporary Expressions

Building on the idea of “proper dressing,” the collection ventures into new interpretations of elegance shaped by modern and more relaxed dress codes. The quintessential dinner suit, traditionally the height of refinement, becomes a canvas for romantic tonal flowers that also appear on coats and shirts. These softly disruptive floral elements lend an air of poetry, mirrored by knitwear incorporating floral patterns and textural details as a nod to formality.

Outerwear as a Framework for Confidence

From greatcoats and trench coats to Crombie coats and parkas, outerwear serves as a structural basis for an elevated silhouette and spirit. Reassuring, time-honored fabrics are enlivened by bright shearling lapels. Meanwhile, tailored jackets drawing inspiration from ceremonial attire are crafted in tactile materials, offering a polished alternative to the classic suit jacket. Leather, suede, and shearling pieces amplify the collection’s homage to timeless wardrobe staples.

Blurring Workwear and Tailoring

Utilitarian elements merge with tailoring to create a “practical elegance.” Coats, suits, and shirts feature cargo pockets reimagined as epaulettes or patches on elbows and knees. Influences from extreme sports also appear, notably in padded and boldly patterned knitwear that supports an upright posture. Sleek nylon and leather trousers add a regal touch, while knitted long-johns replace traditional sweatpants, redefining comfortable daily wear.

Minhwa Motifs: Order in the Midst of Chaos

Minhwa, a form of Korean folk art from the Chosun era (1392–1910), adorns garments with scenic illustrations. Though inherently chaotic in design, these artworks radiate a soothing quality through soft colors and balanced compositions. Wooyoungmi deconstructs and reconstructs original minhwa pieces into collages, printing them on puffer jackets, linings, long-johns, and bags to symbolize the harmony found within disorder.

Finishing Touches: Footwear and Accessories

Inspired by ceremonial shoes, leather lace-up derbies, Chelsea boots, and block-heel shoes are encased in tonal harnesses. Duffle bags and backpacks echo the collection’s core materials and feature the minhwa motif. Knitted scarves, reminiscent of narrow tuxedo scarves, and mittens connected by strings add a playful yet refined detail. Lastly, caps typically associated with sportswear appear here as reimagined elegant hats. Presented in the lavish salons of Hôtel de Maisons, the show underscores its thematic “energetic elegance” with orchestral concertos, marking a sophisticated finale to Wooyoungmi’s Fall-Winter 2025 presentation.
